You have an event coming up, your outfit is picked, your route is mapped. Then boom, something interrupts your plans. When something like this, or even more drastic than this, happens – it’s easy to feel frustrated. We can make a plan, decide how we will actualise the plan – but how often do we ensure we are pursuing what God wants us to do not what we want to? What we must remember is life doesn’t happen our way. It happens God’s way. So even if we try to take matters in our own hands it’s likely that we will be walking around in circles rather than a straight line. Why? Because without God in the centre of all things, there is no solid foundation. So, how do we stay on track? Well, it’s simple – don’t lose focus.

In the story of Noah in Genesis 6-9, when Noah decided to obey God and build an ark he may not have known it would take so long, but he knew what he had to do. He simply did not lose focus. The journey may be long but the goal is always reachable if you keep your eyes on the vision.

You may be facing a challenge right now, you may feel like you’re being hit, dragged and pulled by day-to-day circumstances that you didn’t prepare for. Don’t feel disheartened. Keep your eyes on your path, remember your why and don’t lose focus. When a hurdler comes face-to-face with an obstacle they jump and carry on running, we should adopt this approach to our lives. When something pops up in your way, don’t allow it to stop you. It may cause you to buckle, it may even cause you to fall! But, get up, wipe off the dirt and keep running towards your finish line – stay focused on your course and jump over that obstacle so you can continue on your way to reaching your goal.

Here are five practical ways to not lose focus:

1. Pray before you plan – give all things to God first in prayer.
2. Remember your WHY. Why have you set this goal? Why are you going after it?
3. Don’t feel threatened by your hurdles and obstacles in life. Confront them. You’re bigger.
4. Tell someone who matters to you about your goal so they can help you stay on course.
5. Look straight ahead and fix your eyes on what lies before you. (Proverbs 4:25 NLT)
